P. 10

Everyone from Letterkenny to Longford, Ringaskiddy to Roscommon,
can experience GAZE 2020, and we look forward to continuing to
engage with audiences this way in the future.

Programming GAZE through the lens of a pandemic, separated from
friends and (chosen) family, has influenced our choices this year. Now
more than ever, we aim to entertain, uplift, engage and arouse, and this
is a programme for our time. The festival is bookended by two films
that embody all of this. We open with the heartbreaking story of love
between older people, that part of our population hit hardest by the
pandemic, in our Opening Film Two of Us.

And we end the festival with our Closing Film No Hard Feelings, which
tells the story of young refugees in Germany and speaks to the dreams
of a better future we all deserve. In between, we have a collection
of new and classic films from around the world, including a focus on
German cinema, and two films under the title of Black Lives Matter
      (on Screen).

I want to thank all our partners who have helped put this programme
together in extraordinary circumstances: the IFI and Light House
Cinema, cultural and community partners including the Goethe-Institut
Irland and the French Embassy in Ireland, and our brilliant Festival
Friends. But the biggest thanks from me personally go to the amazing
Board of GAZE, and in particular the tireless work of Festival Producer
Anna Taylor, who have helped pull it all off. This festival would be
nothing without them. And, of course, we are nothing without our
audience: newcomers and longstanding supporters alike. GAZE 2020 is
a labour of love. These are our stories, and I hope you enjoy them.

Here’s to a bigger and brighter future. We have always looked out for
      each other. Let’s not stop.

      Seán McGovern,
      Head of Programming
